Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.

Aviation Problems

The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.

Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.

A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.

International Illegal Trade

While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."

Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.

Regional Consequences

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.

Criminal Methodology

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."

European Tensions

Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.

Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
